Meet Our Executive Team

Martin Delage
B.A., CRHA, President and Chief Operating Officer

Martin joined the La Capitale family in 1992 and has held progressive leadership roles in the areas of Human Resources and Operations. In May 2009, he was appointed to the position of President and COO of Unica Insurance and is responsible for the operation and strategic direction of the company. Prior to this, he was Vice President of Strategic Operations at La Capitale General and played a vital role as a liaison between Unica and La Capitale, since La Capitale’s acquisition of Unica in October 2008.

Martin holds a B.A. from Laval University and is a graduate of the Management Business program at Montreal HEC. He has also completed a Management Course in England from the ICMIF Nantwich/Manchester.

Mr. Delage has been active in many industry associations including the Ontario Committee of the Insurance Bureau of Canada.

Katherine Evans
B.Sc., CA, CPA, Vice President and Chief Financial Officer

Katherine joined Unica Insurance in December 2004. Prior to joining Unica, Katherine worked for an Ontario Property and Casualty insurer following a career as a partner in a firm of Chartered Accountants. She worked in both Montreal and Toronto in leadership roles in public accountancy, taxation and I.T.

Katherine is a graduate of McGill University with a Bachelor of Science degree. She received her CA designation and is a member of the Honour Roll.

Dave Smiley
B.Sc., FCIP, Vice President, Operations

Dave joined Unica Insurance in May 2009, bringing with him almost 20 years of extensive insurance experience. Prior to joining Unica, Dave held various leadership positions in Underwriting, Business Development, and Marketing at a major property & casualty insurance company. Originally from Nova Scotia, Dave also spent part of his career based in Calgary and so has extensive knowledge of Western, Central and Atlantic Canada.

Dave is a graduate of Acadia University with a Bachelor of Science degree and is a Fellow Chartered Insurance Professional. Dave has a passion for building strong, sustainable organizations and is very excited about the future of Unica.
