As temperatures dip below zero, it’s not uncommon for construction sites or small businesses to purchase space heaters. When used properly, space heaters can provide warmth to those working. But when used improperly they can cause fires, electrical shocks, or produce carbon monoxide (CO) gas. We’ve put together some tips to help keep your business safe this winter.
- Management: Don’t allow your staff to bring their own space heaters or any other electrical appliances to the office or work site. By maintaining control of appliances used on the work site, it will help to ensure that only properly labeled equipment is purchased, and that procedures are established to keep these devices properly maintained.The labels to look out for are UL (Underwriters Laboratory), CSA (Canadian Standards Association), or ETL (Interlek).
- Placement: Keep the space heater in a safe place with minimal risk of fire. Place the heater on a level, non-combustible surface. Avoid placing the heater in a bathroom or another room with lots of moisture, because moisture can damage the unit. And always keep the heater 3 feet away from flammable materials.
- Usage: Avoid using extension cords for space heaters. Using an extension cord can lead to overheating. We suggest plugging in your space heater directly into the outlet and to make sure the space heater is the only item plugged into the outlet.
- Attendance: You should never leave the space heater unattended, even if you are leaving for a few minutes.
- Maintain: Always inspect and maintain the space heater regularly. Make sure that it stays in good condition.
